Description:

Château le Roudier is a 25-hectare (62-acre) property on Bordeaux’s east bank in the village of Maransin near the satellite appellations of Saint-Emilion. Because it is slightly cooler here and the soil is heavy in clay, Merlot does especially well; in fact, this wine is 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Cycling enthusiast Patrick Chevrier’s grandfather began the estate with 5.5 hectares, all planted to white grapes. Patrick’s father took over in 1968 and converted the vineyard to red varietals. After his death in 1991, Patrick took control and purchased additional acreage. His winemaking is traditional with a cold maceration, a three-week fermentation at controlled temperatures, and aging in mostly used casks. The 2014 showcases the strength of the vintage on the east bank with deep color, a youthful but velvety texture, and rich fruit for such an inexpensive wine. The bouquet displays a spicy mixture of red and black fruits with a toast dimension, while the palate features similar ripe cherry and blackcurrant fruit as well as some oak, silky smooth tannins, and a sense of freshness. Wine Enthusiast: 90 $15 “There is plenty of ripe fruit here. With soft tannins and a generous structure, the wine is rich, full of berry and red-plum flavors and with just enough tannins. Give this fruity wine until 2018.” It is quite enjoyable now with short aeration.
