- Mighty ancient city of Ani, the capital of the kingdom Bagratids, first mentioned in chronicles in the V century, it is called the “City of 1001 churches” or “City of forty gates.” Already at that time the city was large enough for its time (about two hundred thousand inhabitants) and has a developed infrastructure. In addition to its beautiful architecture, the city was famous for the fact that stayed here caravans, marching along the Silk Road. On surviving the main gate of the city shows a leopard – a symbol of Ani, exactly the same leopard you can see on the label of Armenian cognac Ararat Ani.
